Aboriginal Head Start

Enhancing Early Childhood Development

The Aboriginal Head Start Program is a community-driven initiative dedicated to enhancing early childhood development and preparing young children for success in school and life. Rooted in traditional teachings and holistic growth, the program focuses on nurturing every aspect of a child’s well-being—spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical—while fostering pride in cultural identity and community connection.

Through half-day preschool programming, the initiative welcomes Indigenous, non-Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit children, offering a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment where each child can learn, explore, and grow. The program’s activities are carefully designed to build foundational skills that support school readiness, such as communication, problem-solving, creativity, and cooperation. At the same time, children develop confidence and curiosity through play-based learning that respects their individuality and cultural background.

Social Support and Education

A core strength of the program is its holistic approach, guided by six interconnected areas: health promotion, nutrition, parental involvement, Aboriginal culture and language, social support, and education. Together, these pillars ensure that children receive a balanced and comprehensive early learning experience. Health and nutrition programs encourage lifelong wellness through healthy habits and meals, while parental involvement strengthens family bonds and supports learning at home. Cultural and language teachings reconnect children with traditional knowledge, stories, and values, helping them build a strong sense of identity and belonging.

The social support and education components further enhance development by providing opportunities for emotional growth, social interaction, and academic preparation in a caring, community-oriented setting.

Ultimately, this program strives to create a foundation for lifelong success by blending cultural knowledge with early learning best practices. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern educational approaches, it nurtures confident, healthy, and capable children who are ready to enter school with pride, resilience, and a deep connection to their heritage and community.
