Aboriginal Diabetes Prevention Program
Diabetes Prevention
The Aboriginal Diabetes Prevention (ADP) Program, offered through APANO, is a community-based initiative focused on improving health and preventing diabetes among Indigenous peoples through education, awareness, and active living. The program emphasizes both health promotion and primary prevention, aiming to reduce the risk of diabetes by fostering healthy habits, increasing physical activity, and encouraging balanced nutrition. By raising awareness about the signs, symptoms, and prevention of diabetes, the ADP Program empowers individuals and families to make informed lifestyle choices that support long-term wellness.
Central to the program are its recreational and sport opportunities, which engage youth and community members in fun, active, and culturally inclusive activities. These opportunities not only help participants maintain physical health but also build community spirit and promote social connection. The ADP Program offers a wide range of activities, including a community garden, where participants can learn about healthy eating and traditional food practices, as well as a women’s fitness program that supports strength, confidence, and self-care.

APANO's Diverse Programs
For younger participants, the program provides an after-school program and elementary intramurals, encouraging active play, teamwork, and healthy habits from an early age. Older youth and adults can participate in initiatives like the female basketball league, which fosters physical fitness and empowerment through sport. Additionally, cultural and recreational events such as the annual dance camp and a four-week summer camp create safe, supportive environments for learning, movement, and personal growth.
Through these diverse programs, APANO’s ADP initiative not only addresses diabetes prevention but also strengthens community ties, promotes cultural identity, and enhances overall quality of life. By combining education, physical activity, and community engagement, the program provides a holistic approach to health that reflects Indigenous values and supports lasting wellness across generations.
